Both sides are partly right

Researchers at leading AI labs are publicly warning that development may be moving too quickly. CNBC reports that employees are calling for slower development amid concerns about recursive self-improvement and catastrophic loss of control.

And then there is the power bill. Training and operating frontier systems requires energy, cooling, data centers, and infrastructure. The public debate loves capability charts. It is less enthusiastic about electricity charts.

That omission will not last forever.

4. Russia’s drone attack on Ukraine and Ukraine’s deepest strike into Russia

Self-defense is not war-making

Reporting from Al Jazeera, The Kyiv Post, and The Guardian describes a large overnight Russian attack on Ukraine involving roughly 149 drones and guided aerial bombs.

The strikes hit shopping areas, homes, warehouses, ports, and energy infrastructure. Casualty figures continued to change as emergency crews worked, with reports of at least nine people killed and dozens injured.

Ukraine then struck two gas condensate plants in the Arctic Yamalo-Nenets region, more than 3,000 kilometers from its border. It was described as Ukraine’s deepest strike of the war.

My position is straightforward: I am anti-war. I am also pro-self-defense and pro-Ukraine.
